Cactus in a Desert Heart
The Reflection
Cactus came from an early memory.
It is a reflection on loneliness, on what it feels like to stand alone while the world around you seems connected.
When I was at navy school, I found myself among more than a thousand cadets, yet I felt invisible. I was painfully introverted and shy, the kind of person people often called “weird.” While everyone else formed friendships effortlessly, I struggled to belong.
One memory stayed with me.
It was recess. Groups of cadets laughed together, talked, and moved through the courtyard with ease. Small circles formed naturally around me, but never around me. I stood alone in a corner, watching, wishing I could be part of it.
Sometimes I tried.
But each time I approached, conversations would slowly fade, people would drift away, or the energy would change. In those moments, I truly felt alone.
That feeling became the seed of Cactus.
The cactus became the perfect metaphor for the emotional world I carried inside me. A cactus survives in the harshness of the desert, isolated, exposed, and enduring conditions that would destroy more delicate things.
Yet despite everything, it still blooms.
That is the miracle of the cactus.
Its beauty does not come from the outside world choosing it. Its bloom comes from within.
Over time, I realised something important: I never truly needed the crowd to validate my existence. I was enough on my own.
And that is how Cactus was born.
